Bob Dylan?! What’s next, The Beatles?!
I know. It’s annoying enough to listen to a 28-year-old white dude write about music, now he’s going to write about Bob Fucking Dylan? Insufferable.
But I just have to say that I’ve been obsessed with later Dylan recently and specifically “Most of The Time” Alternate Version from ‘Oh Mercy’ Sessions in 1989.
I’m mostly obsessed with it because I’m shocked at how truly sentimental, tender, and just plain good it is. At this point Dylan was in his late 40’s. He had already proven everything to everyone he could ever have to prove. He had gone electric, made a handful of classics, went Christian, made some of the best music of the 20th century, done everything thats been written about endlessly. It would have been perfectly acceptable for him to just phone it in, cash his checks, wear his little hats and bolo ties and just become some old rocker standing on stage with 11 other guys all playing guitar (he does eventually succumb to this aging rocker behavior).
But on “Most of The Time” he sounds like he actually gives a shit. He’s soft, stripped back, and sentimental. A middle aged man reflecting on past loves.
It’s hard for me to try at something for more than a week. It’s amazing to me that Bob has never given up on making amazing music.
So yea, Bob Dylan is amazing. There’s the least unique take you’ve ever heard.
Thanks for listening,
Will
