I live with my girlfriend Madeline, before that I lived with roommates for about 10 years, and before that with my parents.
I think we can all agree that when you live with one or more other people a big part of most nights is sitting down around the TV and finding something to watch.
This can be a simple task or the most excruciating teeth-pulling experience of your day.
But either way, inevitably, someone has to be the one holding the remote, searching, exploring, proposing ideas. And the other person gets to be the decisions maker, the benevolent leader changing the course of the night with a simple “yes” or “no”.
In our apartment, I’m the one clicking away furiously while my Madeline gives her thumbs up. Sometimes this can go on for what feels like hours.
It’s times like these, in these sort of boring, frustrating, unimportant moments of disagreement, that remind me of “Luckenbach, Texas” by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. A song about escaping the chaos and nonsense of modern life for a simpler life in rural Texas in an attempt to rediscover the basics of love. And while I have no intention of leaving my life behind for little Luckenbach, in fact I love hanging on the couch arguing about TV with Madeline, it is fun to fantasize about a simpler life.
A life without Netflix, HBOMax, and Hulu.
“Out in Luckenbach, Texas ain’t nobody feeling no pain”
Thanks for listening,
