A few days ago would have been my grandfather’s 94th birthday. He passed away a few years back and was a huge part of my growing up.
One distinct memory I have, musically, was him and my grandma being obsessed with watching old videos of Roy Orbison, specifically “You Got It” released posthumously in 1989, and enjoyed by my grandparents well into the mid ‘00s.
Both Orbison and my grandparents may have been a bit more spry in the 1950s, but that wasn’t going to stop them from being able to rock out to a classic.
We would often joke with my grandparents that they couldn’t pronounce “Orbison” with their thick old school Brooklyn accents. It would always come out in a sort of jumble of vowels. But pronunciation aside, they were always able to make their way to the dance floor when “You Got It” came on.
My grandma is still with us and will be 98 in April.
Thanks for listening,
Will
