A friend asked me recently why I haven’t written about The Cure yet and I didn’t really have a good answer. It made me realize that after 50 days of doing this, I still haven’t written about some of my favorite music ever.
So today is about The Cure. A band that means a ton to me.
The first thing that grabbed me about The Cure wasn’t their music, but their look. Growing up in American suburbia in the ‘00s I had never seen people that looked this cool. The messy hair, the eyeliner, the dangling earrings, the lipstick, the black baggy clothes. I remember being in middle school and buying a big black Urban Outfitters sweater and messing up my puffy brown hair in an attempt to look like Robert Smith. I ended up with a bad hair day and an ill-fitting outfit, but I felt closer to these icons I saw on youtube and google.
And when it came to the music, it seemed to perfectly reflect the look. It was dark, brooding, but somehow sweet and approachable. Even the name, The Cure, felt appropriate. It was a cure for all the darkness and isolation you can feel as a kid. It made me feel at home. It was emotional but hopeful.
My favorite song and the one that really god me hooked was “In Between Days”. It’s far from a deep cut but I think it sort of encompasses them in the best way. It’s also my favorite music video ever.
Thanks for listening,
Will
Not one to usually shill my own work, but perhaps you'd find something interesting in my article "10 Most Slept-on Tracks by The Cure": https://flume.substack.com/p/10-most-slept-on-tracks-by-the-cure
