I have a playlist filled with albums from the year I was born (1994), creatively called "The year i was born" and it’s filled with a lot of my favorite music ever.
I don’t know if there was just something in the water or if everyone seems to gravitate to music from around when they were born, regardless of the year.
Maybe there’s something about overhearing things on the radio in your infancy and them implanting on your brain, but its not like I was actively seeking out or discovering music as a 6 month old, and my parents weren’t blasting There’s Nothing Wrong With Love or Twice Removed. Or maybe it’s a sort of narcissistic tendency to think that the year you came into the earth was important or at all significant. But either way over the years I’ve discovered or rediscovered that a lot of the music I gravitate towards came out in 1994.
Yesterday I was listening to some ‘90s Australian alt rock after sharing that Noise Addict tune and revisited Smudge, specifically their album Manilow which, you guessed it, came out in 1994.
I had discovered Smudge by way of Evan Dando and the Lemonheads a while back but had never dug deep enough to realize Manilow came out in 1994.
Now what if I told you that according to the internet the cassette actually first came out in 1993? Does that mean the music is less awesome? Definitely not. But it does mean it’s not about me, and my birth didn’t coincide with alt-rock excellence.
This song, "Ingrown" is one of my favorites, regardless of when it came out.
Do you find yourself obsessing with music from when you were born? or is that a rabbit hole that I’m alone in? Let me know.
I’m still not sure exactly when Manilow came out, but I’m not sure it really matters.
Thanks for listening,
Will
