Nostalgia is a funny thing. I’ve touched on it before but think it gets a bad rep as being lazy or stifling innovation. But I think if used in the right way it can be one of the best tools of creativity.
Like, why were they so obsessed with the ‘50s in the ‘70s? Apart from the movies and TV Shows like Grease, American Graffiti, and Happy Days the ‘50s obsession also arguably gave way to the birth of punk rock, with the Ramones. And anything that helped create the Ramones is alright in my book.
But this isn’t about the Ramones (that one’s for another day). This is about The Real Kids, another ‘50s inspired rock band started in Boston by former Modern Lover, John Felice.
They took that same spirit as the Ramones of speeding up ‘50s-sounding rock tunes and turning them into something more energetic and messy. But with a bit more of a pop rock twist. This song is especially great, to me, and makes me want to bust out my leather jacket.
I’m not sure my point on nostalgia but I think I’d boil it down to; if this is what lazy creativity gets you, then why work hard?
Thanks for listening,
Will
