I’ve got a serious soft spot for ‘60s baroque pop. It makes me think of Austin Powers, puffy shirts, overbearing sideburns, and perfect little pop rock tunes like this one from The Left Banke.
There are better people to give you a full deep dive on the history and significance of baroque pop. But, its fascinating that even in the heart of the ‘60s, the musical generation that has been pushed to us as being innovative, fresh, cutting edge, and revolutionary, there were a lot of folks looking back at dudes from the 1600s for their style and sound inspo.
This isn’t to say that they weren’t revolutionary, and all those things attributed to them, as much as to say that maybe the complaint that today’s music and culture is too vintage and nostalgia obsessed, is kind of bullshit.
Maybe leave the kids alone and let them borrow and steal from the past.
But what do I know. I’m just a guy who bought himself a puffy shirt in 2020 and whose girlfriend refuses to let him wear said puffy shirt to weddings or events.
Thanks for listening,
Will
Show us the puffy shirt, coward!
