Are lyrics important?
I like to think so, but i’m often proven wrong by the music I listen to.
I went to see Ride the other night at Brooklyn Steel and it was incredible.
They played “Taste”, one of my favorite songs from them, that lyrically consists mostly of “ahhs”, hums, and repeated lines. It was exceptional. For a band playing a song released over 25 years ago, it sounded emotional, fuzzed out, and pertinent.
And I don’t think I was the only one who was blown away. The blue-light-soaked sea of knee length parkas and receding mod cuts swayed back and forth like an anthropomorphic version of their Nowhere album art with their eyes glued to the stage.
So are lyrics important? I don’t know. I’m not the one to make that call. But I can say that Ride is important, and they proved it on stage.
Thanks for listening,
Will
